SEO vs Local SEO vs Google Business Profile
Three terms, sold interchangeably, doing three different jobs. Here is what each one actually is, and which one your business needs first.
GEO ANSWER
SEO helps a website rank in standard Google search results. Local SEO targets nearby searches and the Google Maps results. A Google Business Profile is the free listing that powers the map results and the side panel beside organic search. Most local businesses need all three working together, not just one in isolation.
What SEO Is
GEO ANSWER
Search engine optimization is the work of making a website rank in standard Google search results, the ten blue links, for the terms your customers type.
It is the oldest of the three and the broadest. The work splits into three buckets. Technical work makes the site fast, crawlable and free of the errors that stop Google reading it. Content work builds pages that answer what people are actually searching for, in the words they actually use. Authority work earns links and mentions from other sites, which is how Google decides whether to trust you over someone else saying the same thing.
SEO is not tied to a location by default. A software company in Chicago and a software company in Denver compete for the same terms on the same national results page. That is the important difference from the next term, and it is why a business that only sells within thirty miles is often paying for the wrong thing when it buys generic SEO.
What Local SEO Is
GEO ANSWER
Local SEO is the subset of search engine optimization aimed at nearby searches, the ones where Google decides what to show based on where the searcher is standing.
When someone searches a service near them, Google returns a different kind of results page. There is a map with three businesses pinned on it, usually called the map pack, and then the standard blue links below it. Local SEO is the work of winning both of those, for people physically close enough to become customers.
The work overlaps with regular SEO and then adds things regular SEO does not care about. Your name, address and phone number have to match everywhere they appear online, because Google cross-checks them. You need pages built around the places you actually serve rather than one page listing forty towns. Reviews matter directly, in a way they do not for a national ranking. And your Google Business Profile has to be complete and active, which brings us to the third term.

What a Google Business Profile Is
GEO ANSWER
A Google Business Profile is the free listing Google gives your business. It powers the map results and the panel that appears beside search results when someone looks you up by name.
It was called Google My Business until 2021. You will still see the old name on plenty of pages explaining it, which is a decent signal of how recently that page was written. Same thing, current name.
The profile is a listing, not a website, and that distinction matters. It holds your hours, categories, service area, photos, reviews, questions and posts. It is free, and you claim and control it yourself. It is also the single largest source of phone calls for many local service businesses, because someone who searches on a phone and taps the call button from the map never visits your site at all.
Because it is free and self-serve, plenty of businesses assume it is finished once it exists. In practice a claimed but neglected profile is one of the most common gaps we find. We cover the work itself on Google Business Profile management, and the setup detail on Google Business Profile optimization.
The Three, Side by Side
GEO ANSWER
SEO affects your website's ranking nationally, local SEO affects your visibility in nearby searches and the map pack, and a Google Business Profile is the free listing behind the map and the side panel. SEO is slowest to move, the profile is fastest, and local SEO sits between them at three to six months.
Same six questions, asked of all three. Cell text is kept short on purpose, because a comparison table that needs a paragraph per cell is not a comparison.
| SEO | Local SEO | Google Business Profile | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it affects | Your website's ranking in standard results | Your visibility in nearby searches and maps | Your listing in maps and the side panel |
| Where you show up | The ten blue links, nationally | The map pack and nearby blue links | Google Maps and the knowledge panel |
| Who it is for | Anyone selling beyond one local area | Businesses serving customers within driving distance | Any business with a location or service area |
| What it costs | Ongoing work, priced as a monthly retainer | Ongoing work, usually alongside regular SEO | Free to claim. The work on it is not |
| How fast it moves | Slowest. Six months or more is normal | Three to six months for measurable movement | Fastest. Profile changes can show within days |
| If you skip it | You stay invisible for research and comparison | Nearby buyers find a competitor instead | You forfeit the free listing to a stale one |
Which One Do You Need First?
GEO ANSWER
For most local service businesses the order is Google Business Profile first, local SEO second, and broader SEO third. The profile is free, moves fastest, and sits closest to a phone call.
That order holds for most local businesses, and it is a starting point rather than a rule. Each one does a different job. Part of our job is telling you which ones matter most for your business right now.
The profile goes first because it is free, because changes to it can show up within days rather than months, and because for a service business the map pack is often where the calls come from. If your profile is incomplete or unclaimed, nothing else you pay for will outperform fixing it.
Local SEO goes second because it compounds. The site pages, the review flow and the consistency of your business details across the web all feed back into the profile's own performance. The two are not separate campaigns. Getting every one of those details to say the same thing everywhere is its own discipline, called brand entity optimization.
Broader SEO goes third for a local business, and first for a business selling beyond one region. If you sell nationally, or online, or to a professional audience that researches before it buys, the order inverts. There is a fourth surface now too: answer engines. If people are asking ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews for a recommendation in your category, that is its own work, and we cover it on answer engine optimization.
What none of this should be is a package sold to you before anyone looked at your situation. We cover what this range of work costs on SEO pricing, and the honest answer to which piece you need first is that it depends on what is already working.
One Business, Three Jobs
GEO ANSWER
Follow one business through all three and the division of labor becomes obvious: the profile catches people ready to call, local SEO catches people comparing, and SEO catches people still learning.
Picture a heating and cooling company in Mokena that serves Will County. This is an illustration rather than a client, and the numbers are deliberately absent, because the point is the shape of the work rather than a result we are claiming.
Someone's furnace fails on a Tuesday night. They search for furnace repair near them and tap the first map result that is open and has recent reviews. That is the Google Business Profile doing the work. The website barely enters into it.
Someone else is replacing a system in the spring and is not in a hurry. They compare three companies, read the service pages, and check whether anyone serves their town specifically. That is local SEO doing the work, and it is why a page about the service in the place beats one page listing every town in the county.
A third person is a year out and reading about whether a heat pump makes sense in an Illinois winter. They are not ready to call anyone. If the company shows up in that research, it becomes the familiar name when the furnace finally fails. That is broader SEO doing the work, and it is the slowest and least direct of the three.
One business, one budget, three different jobs. Skip the profile and you lose the Tuesday night call. Skip local SEO and you lose the spring comparison. Skip SEO entirely and you are only ever found by people already looking for you.
