Reddit marketing for a local business is not buying ads or posting about yourself. It is earning honest posts from real customers, and taking part openly as the owner where locals ask for recommendations. You keep asking for Google reviews. You add a second, different ask.
That matters because the places people and AI tools read have changed. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for a good local plumber. The answer often leans on forum threads written by people like your customers. This guide covers how to earn those posts without breaking Reddit’s rules, the FTC’s rules, or your customers’ trust.
The idea comes from a short video by AI SEO creator Joshua Albanese. Watch him explain why he would ask customers for a Reddit post, not just a Google review. It runs 28 seconds, and the full transcript sits under it.

Why Reddit Now Shapes What Customers and AI Read
Two data deals explain much of the shift. In February 2024, Google announced an expanded partnership with Reddit that gives it access to Reddit’s Data API. Google said that access helps it display Reddit content across its products and train its models.
In May 2024, Reddit announced a similar partnership with OpenAI. Reddit said OpenAI would bring Reddit content into ChatGPT and new products. Neither company published the financial terms of either deal.
Google has also been adding these voices to its own results. In 2022 it launched a Discussions and forums feature, saying forums are a useful place to find first-hand advice. In 2023 it said its helpful content system would show more hidden gems, such as a comment in a forum thread.
Semrush’s research shows what that looks like inside AI answers. It studied 248,000 Reddit posts cited across 217,000 prompts. Reddit was the most cited domain on Perplexity, second on ChatGPT Search, and third on Google AI Mode. Most of the cited posts had fewer than 20 upvotes and 20 comments. More than half came from question and answer threads.
That last finding is the important one for a small business. The threads AI tools quote are often small, ordinary conversations, the kind one honest customer can start by answering a neighbor’s question.
The numbers also move, so treat them as a direction rather than a constant. A separate three-month Semrush study found ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August 2025, then around 10% by mid-September. Reddit still ranked among ChatGPT’s two most-cited domains.
Closer to home, BrightLocal checked 800 local Google results pages in spring 2024. Reddit results appeared for 81% of informational local searches, such as best coffee shop, and 16% of transactional ones, such as coffee shop. BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found that 45% of consumers now use ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations. A year earlier, that figure was 6%.
Reddit is one of the places Google and AI tools read about local businesses. Honest customer posts there help shape how your business is understood.
A Google Review and a Reddit Post Do Different Jobs
A star rating and a written story are not the same asset. Joshua’s point in the video is that they reach different places and do different jobs. So split the ask, and do not swap one for the other.
| Google review | Reddit post | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | Your Google Business Profile | A local or trade community thread |
| What it holds | A star rating and a short note | A story in the customer’s own words |
| Who reads it | People comparing you on Maps | People asking neighbors for advice |
| What AI can use | Your rating and review themes | Specific details about the job and the result |
| Who starts it | Usually your request | Often someone else’s question |
| Your control | Reply and report policy breaks | Reply as a disclosed owner, nothing more |
Google reviews are still the base layer. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses. The same survey found Google’s share as a review source dipped from 83% in 2025 to 71%. That shift is one reason a second surface is worth building.

How to Ask Customers for a Reddit Post
The ask itself is simple, and most of the skill is in what you leave out. You are not requesting a testimonial. You are letting a customer know their honest account would help other people in town, if they already use Reddit.
Ask the same customers you already ask for a Google review, not only the ones who seemed happiest. The FTC’s guide for marketers says it directly: “Don’t ask for reviews only from customers you think will leave positive ones.” Filtering your list by mood is the fastest way to turn an honest practice into a misleading one.
Timing matters more than wording. The best moment is at the end of a finished job, face to face, or in the same follow-up message that carries your review link. Start by asking whether they use Reddit at all, because many customers do not, and that is fine.

If they do use it, a plain version of the ask sounds like this. Change the words to fit how you talk, but keep what it leaves out.
Thanks again for having us out. If someone on Reddit ever asks about a job like this, we would be grateful for your honest take. Good or bad, in your own words. No pressure either way.
Notice what that ask does not contain. Each item below is either against a rule or makes the post less believable to the people reading it.
- No discount, gift card, or entry into a drawing.
- No script, keywords, or talking points for them to include.
- No request to upvote a thread or tag your business.
- No link to a thread you started yourself and want filled with praise.
- No follow-up nudge after they say they would rather not.
Most customers who post will do it by answering a neighbor’s question. That is the healthiest version, because the post helps the person asking.
The Rules That Keep the Ask Honest
Four sets of rules touch this practice, and they agree more than they differ. The short version is to ask everyone, pay no one, script nothing, and disclose any connection. The details are below.
- The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials rule. It took effect October 21, 2024. The FTC’s announcement lists what it bans. That includes fake reviews, sentiment-based incentives, undisclosed insider reviews, and review suppression by threat or intimidation.
- The FTC Endorsement Guides. 16 CFR Part 255 says a connection a reader would not expect must be disclosed. Its own example is an employee promoting the employer’s product on an online discussion board without saying so.
- Reddit’s rules. Reddit’s sitewide rules ask people to participate authentically and ban content manipulation. Reddit also bans coordinated voting by an organized group, and its spam policy leaves each community’s moderators to decide what counts as spam.
- Google’s review policy. For the Google half of the ask, Google’s Maps content policy bars incentives for reviews and selectively soliciting positive reviews from customers.
One nuance is worth knowing. The FTC rule is written around reviews posted on sites built to collect them, and it does not say whether a Reddit post counts. Act as if it does, because the FTC Act and the Endorsement Guides apply either way, and Reddit’s own rules point the same direction.
This is marketing guidance, not legal advice. If you are unsure whether a specific practice is allowed, confirm it with the attorney who advises your business.
How to Show Up on Reddit as the Owner
Customer posts are half of Reddit marketing for local businesses. The other half is you, showing up as a knowledgeable neighbor rather than an advertiser. Done well, it is one of the more useful Reddit marketing strategies a small business can run, because it costs time rather than money.
Use one account and say who you are. Open with a line such as I own a heating company in town, so weigh this accordingly. That earns more trust than hiding the connection, and it is what the Endorsement Guides expect. Then answer the question that was asked, even when the honest answer is that they do not need to hire anyone.
Read each community’s rules before your first comment. Many local subreddits limit or ban self-promotion, and moderators enforce those rules. Link to your own site only when someone asks for it or the community allows it.
When a negative post appears, reply once, calmly, and offer to make it right directly. Never threaten the poster or push for removal. If reviews and reputation are a steady source of stress, our online reputation and review management service handles the monitoring and response side.
What Reddit Marketing Does Not Do
Reddit posts are one input among many, and you do not control them. A thread can praise you, criticize you, or recommend a competitor. That lack of control is why readers trust it more than your own website copy.
We do not promise rankings, lead counts, or map placements, because no honest provider can. We help your business stay understandable across Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. AI helps us work faster. It does not guarantee AI visibility, and we will never tell you otherwise.
Reddit also cannot fix a weak foundation. AI tools need a clear website, a complete Google Business Profile, and business details that match across the web. Our guide to answer engine optimization for local businesses explains that foundation. Our digital brand entity optimization service helps keep those details consistent.
How Long Before Any of This Shows Up?
There is no fixed timeline for Reddit posts, because customers post on their own schedule and only when a conversation calls for it. Expect a slow trickle, not a campaign.
Most local SEO shows measurable movement in about three to six months, depending on competition and the condition of your site. Reddit mentions sit on top of that work and build less predictably.
To see whether anything is changing, search Reddit for your business name once a month. Then ask two AI tools who they would recommend for your service in your town, and note which sources they cite. Our guide to tracking local SEO performance across Google and AI search shows how to keep that record alongside your Google Search Console data.
Where to Start This Week
You do not need a budget or a tool to start. These five steps take about an hour in the first week and a few minutes a week after that.
- Search Reddit for your town and your trade, and note the communities your customers use.
- Read each community’s rules, and set up one owner account that says who you are.
- Add the Reddit question to the review follow-up you already send every customer.
- Answer one real question this week, with your connection disclosed, and without linking to yourself unless asked.
- Once a month, check Reddit and two AI tools for your name, and write down what you find.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give customers a discount for posting about us on Reddit?
No. The FTC rule bans incentives tied to a positive review, and Google bans incentives for reviews entirely. Ask without offering anything.
Can I post about my own business on Reddit?
Yes, if you say plainly that you own it and you follow each community’s rules. The FTC Endorsement Guides say a business connection must be disclosed when readers would not expect it. Many subreddits limit self-promotion, and their moderators decide what counts as spam, so read the rules first.
Should I stop asking for Google reviews?
No. Split the ask instead of replacing it. BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found that 97% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses. Your Google rating still does work that a Reddit thread cannot do.
Will Reddit posts get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
No one can promise that, and you should be cautious of anyone who does. Reddit is one of many sources AI tools read, and the sources they cite shift from month to month. Honest posts make your business easier to describe accurately, which is the part you can influence.
What if a customer posts something negative about us?
Reply once, calmly, in public, and offer to fix the problem directly. Never threaten the poster or pressure them to delete it. The FTC rule treats threats used to remove a negative review as review suppression.
Can my employees post about us or upvote the thread?
Only with clear disclosure that they work for you. The FTC Endorsement Guides require that connection to be disclosed, and Reddit bans coordinated voting by an organized group. Let your team answer questions openly and leave the voting alone.
What does it cost to get help with this?
Cost depends on your site, your competition, and your goals. We will be clear about pricing before any work begins. Our reputation management pricing guide covers the cost question in more detail.
Is your business ready to become easier to find, easier to understand, easier to choose? We can help you build the visibility system behind that growth. Start with a conversation. We will look at where you stand and what comes next … no pressure and no contract.
