SEO Audit Cost (2026): What a Real Audit Includes and What a Free One Leaves Out

An SEO audit costs nothing if you run a free automated scan, and about 2,000 to 10,000 dollars as a one-time project when a professional does it properly. The spread is that wide because the word audit covers two different products.

One is a report: a list of what a crawler found. The other is a plan: which four of those forty findings move your business, in what order, and who does them.

What does an SEO audit cost in 2026?

For most small and mid-sized businesses, a professional SEO audit runs about 2,000 to 10,000 dollars as a one-time project. Free scans cost nothing. There is no flat rate, because site size, how the site was built, and whether you get a plan all move the number.

An SEO audit costs nothing for a free automated scan, about 139 dollars a month in software if you run the tools yourself, and roughly 2,350 to 9,500 dollars as a professional one-time project. The Search Sherpa runs one diagnostic at one published price: a 2,000 dollar Custom SEO Roadmap, credited in full toward your first month of retainer services.

Those middle figures come from a survey of 439 SEO service providers, updated August 2024. For one-off project work, the category an audit sits in, freelancers averaged 2,348.63 dollars, consultants 8,685.53 and agencies 9,507.84, and the most common band was 2,501 to 5,000 dollars (Ahrefs SEO pricing survey). The averages run higher because a few large projects pull them up.

Doing it yourself is cheaper, and the price is the software. The Screaming Frog SEO Spider crawls 500 URLs free and costs 199 pounds a year unlimited (Screaming Frog). Semrush plans start at 139 dollars a month (Semrush), and its Site Audit advertises more than 140 checks (Semrush Site Audit). None of that includes a person reading the result.

Our own figure is published and singular. Every engagement at The Search Sherpa begins with a 2,000 dollar Custom SEO Roadmap, and our SEO pricing page states the terms: over approximately four weeks we analyze your full digital footprint, and if you choose to work with us on the execution, the 2,000 dollars is credited fully toward your first month of retainer services. Hand it to your own team instead and it is yours to keep. The page calls that strategy before retainer, and its job is to remove retainer risk.

What you are actually paying for in an SEO audit

You are paying for two things that look alike. Discovery is finding what is broken, missing or outranked. Judgment is deciding which findings matter this quarter. Tools do the first. People do the second.

A real SEO audit covers seven areas: crawl and indexation, technical health and Core Web Vitals, on-page and content quality, local signals and your Google Business Profile, backlinks, a competitor gap analysis, and AI search readiness. What makes it an audit rather than a report is the last deliverable: a prioritized plan naming each fix, its owner, and its order.

Crawl, indexation and technical health

The first question is not whether your pages are good. It is whether Google has them. In the Google Search Console Page Indexing report, Crawled, currently not indexed means Google fetched the page and left it out; Discovered, currently not indexed means Google found the URL and has not crawled it (Google Search Console Help). An audit that never opens that report skips what decides everything else.

Speed is the other half. Good Core Web Vitals means a Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, an Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, at the 75th percentile of page loads (web.dev). Most sites miss it: in 2025, 48 percent of mobile and 56 percent of desktop sites passed (Web Almanac 2025).

On-page, content, local signals and AI search

The on-page pass is what crawlers handle best, and the defect rate is high: in 2025, meta descriptions appeared on 67.7 percent of desktop pages and canonical tags on 68 percent (Web Almanac 2025, SEO). Finding that is cheap. Deciding which pages deserve the work is not.

If you serve a local market, the local half is not an add-on. In the 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors study, a survey of 47 experts, the top factor in the map results is your primary Google Business Profile category, ahead of proximity to the searcher (Whitespark, 2026), and 97 percent of consumers read reviews for local businesses (BrightLocal, 2026). Our local SEO and Google Business Profile management pages cover that work, and the difference between SEO, local SEO and Google Business Profile is worth reading first.

Google is plain about AI search. There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special optimizations necessary; the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and no new files or schema are needed (Google Search Central). AI readiness is not a separate invoice. It is the same crawlability and structured data work, judged by whether an answer engine can quote you cleanly. Our answer engine optimization page goes deeper, and Google adds that correct markup does not guarantee a rich result (structured data policies).

The prioritized plan, which is the actual deliverable

Everything above is input. A crawler hands you forty issue types. The auditor’s job is to say which four cost you money now, which twelve can wait, and which are noise. That ranking is the product.

What changes the price of an SEO audit

Six things move the number, which is why nobody credible quotes an audit before looking.

What moves the priceWhy
Number of URLsCrawl time and the size of the findings set
Platform and page builderA standard WordPress theme diagnoses faster than a heavy builder
Number of locationsEach has its own profile and map results
Market competitivenessMore competitors to pull apart
Plan or findings listA prioritized plan costs more than a tool export
Whether the auditor executesLiving with the plan changes the plan

Site size and how the site was built

Crawl cost scales with URLs, and the tools price themselves that way: the free Screaming Frog tier stops at 500 URLs while the paid licence is unlimited. A 40-page service site and a 40,000-page catalogue are not the same job. A visual page builder can also bury a render-blocking script three layers down.

Whether the auditor will also do the work

Most buyers never ask, and it changes the document. An auditor who will never touch your site can recommend anything, because none of it lands on their calendar. One executing the plan in thirty days recommends what can ship. When to hire an SEO consultant covers that choice.

What an audit is worth, and what skipping one costs

Here is the whole market on one page, with the column most guides omit.

Audit typeTypical 2026 priceDepthPlan included
Free automated scan$0Surface checks, shallow crawlNo
Self-run tool reportFrom $139 a monthFull crawl, no interpretationNo
Freelancer project$2,348.63 averageCrawl, on-page, contentSometimes
Consultant project$8,685.53 averageTechnical, content, local, linksUsually
Agency project$9,507.84 averageSame, at more scaleUsually
Custom SEO Roadmap$2,000, credited to month oneAll of the above, plus schema and AI searchYes, and you keep it

One caveat. Those three middle rows are Ahrefs averages for one-off projects of any kind, not audit-only figures. Read them as the shape of the market, not a quote.

What a wasted retainer month costs

The case for paying for a diagnosis is not that the audit earns money. It does not. The alternative is buying months of execution against a guess. Our SEO pricing page puts local businesses at 1,000 to 3,000 dollars a month, so six months is 6,000 to 18,000 dollars. Spending three of those rewriting pages Google never indexed is an expensive way to learn what a four-week diagnostic finds in week one.

The base rate is not low. More than half of mobile websites missed good Core Web Vitals in 2025, and roughly a third of pages carry no meta description. Defects at that frequency are normal, not bad luck.

The credited roadmap, in plain arithmetic

Run the numbers on the structure, not the pitch. A 2,000 dollar roadmap against a 6,000 to 18,000 dollar six-month retainer is 11 to 33 percent of that spend, paid before you commit. Hire us and the 2,000 comes back as a credit toward month one, so it nets out at zero. Do not hire us and you keep a playbook you can hand to anyone, having spent 2,000 rather than 18,000 to find out the plan was wrong.

Free audit versus paid audit, honestly

Most pricing guides skip this section, because their business depends on the answer. Here it is from someone who sells the paid version and offers a free review as well.

A free SEO audit is a real measurement wrapped around a sales pitch. The tools behind it are good at what they measure: page speed, missing tags, broken links, crawl errors. What no free scan sees is intent, your competitors’ pages, your local market, or your margins, which is what decides the order of the fixes. A paid audit earns its fee when it produces a prioritized plan you keep.

Give the free tools their due. Google Search Console is the only place you see what Google itself did with your pages. PageSpeed Insights reports real-user data from the Chrome User Experience Report over the previous 28-day collection period, plus Lighthouse lab diagnostics (Google). Semrush offers a free SEO Checker at one check per day. On a 40-page site, those find most of the mechanical defects.

Now the limits, in Google’s own documentation. Lab data is collected in a controlled environment, may not capture real-world bottlenecks, and good lab data does not necessarily mean real-user experiences will also be good. That is every automated check: it reports a condition, not a consequence.

The question you actually haveFree scanPaid audit with a plan
Is this page slowYesYes, plus whether it is worth fixing first
Are tags or headings missingYesYes, plus whether the page should exist
Does the page match what searchers wantNoYes
Why do competitors rank above meNoYes
Which fix returns the most, soonestNoYes

Here is the part nobody handing out a free audit says out loud. It is a lead magnet. The findings come from a tool you could have run yourself, the severity labels are that tool’s defaults rather than your market’s, and the recommendation is always the same one: hire the sender. Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO lists the signals to watch, including anyone claiming to guarantee rankings or a special relationship with Google (Google Search Central).

I am not against free audits. I am against presenting a scan as a strategy. The problem starts when the scan is framed as the diagnosis and a twelve-month invoice follows it.

That is why our diagnostic is paid and credited rather than free. You pay for the thinking, not the scan. You own the plan either way, and if you hire us the fee comes back. If you have been burned by an agency that posted blogs and sent reports full of numbers that meant nothing, it was built for you. What your SEO agency should be showing you covers the reporting half.

Is a paid SEO audit worth it?

For most businesses with a site older than two years, yes, on one condition: it has to end in a plan you could act on without the auditor. A crawl export with a cover page is not that.

An audit produces nothing by itself. It changes what you spend the next six months on, which is the more expensive decision. Most local SEO shows measurable movement in about three to six months, depending on competition and the condition of your site, and Google’s own starter guide says some changes might take effect in a few hours while others could take several months (Google Search Central).

We do not promise rankings, lead counts, or map placements, because no honest provider can. What a diagnostic does is stop you paying for the wrong work for two quarters. There is a real case for skipping it: if your budget is small enough that the audit would eat the execution, do not buy one. Open Google Search Console, fix what the Page Indexing report tells you, and spend the rest on the work. Our guide to local SEO cost in the Chicago suburbs covers that spend.

How to read an SEO audit proposal

A legitimate proposal itemizes seven things: the scope, meaning which domain and how many URLs; the tools and crawl depth; whether performance uses field or lab data; the access you must grant, normally Google Search Console, analytics and site admin; the deliverable format and who presents it; how findings are prioritized; and whether you keep the plan if you do not continue.

Four red flags. First, length as proof of value: a 90-page document with no priority order is a crawl export. Second, scores without fixes: a number out of 100 is a scoreboard, not a finding. Third, an audit where every recommendation ends in the auditor’s own retainer. Fourth, a proposal that never states what access it needs, because an audit run without Google Search Console is guessing at the one dataset only you can grant.

Then ask any provider, me included, three questions. What is in scope and what does it cost. What do I keep if I do not hire you. Which three findings come first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an SEO audit cost?

An SEO audit costs nothing for a free automated scan, from about 139 dollars a month if you run the tools yourself, and roughly 2,000 to 10,000 dollars as a one-time professional project. In a survey of 439 SEO providers, one-off projects averaged 2,348.63 dollars from freelancers and 9,507.84 from agencies. The Search Sherpa runs one diagnostic at one published price, a 2,000 dollar Custom SEO Roadmap credited toward your first month.

How much does a technical SEO audit cost?

A technical SEO audit, meaning crawl, indexation, architecture, rendering and Core Web Vitals without the content and link work, normally costs less than a full audit and sits in the low thousands for a small site. Price tracks URL count more than anything else, because the crawl is the labor: the free Screaming Frog tier stops at 500 URLs while the paid licence is unlimited. On a small site it is a section of the audit, not a separate purchase.

Is a free SEO audit worth anything?

Yes as a measurement, no as a strategy. Free tools are good at what they measure: Google Search Console shows what Google did with your pages, PageSpeed Insights reports real-user data from the Chrome User Experience Report, and a free crawl finds broken links and missing tags. What no free scan sees is search intent, your competitors’ pages, your Google Business Profile category, or which finding deserves your money. Treat a free audit as a symptom list, not a diagnosis.

What should an SEO audit include?

A full audit should cover crawl and indexation, technical health and Core Web Vitals, on-page and content quality, local signals and your Google Business Profile, backlinks, a competitor gap analysis, and AI search readiness, and it should end in a prioritized plan naming each fix, who does it, and in what order. Our own roadmap adds a keyword opportunity map, a schema markup audit, and a timeline with monthly milestones.

How long does an SEO audit take, and how long until it shows results?

How long the audit takes depends on the size of the site and the depth of the review; our Custom SEO Roadmap runs over approximately four weeks, as our pricing page states. The fixes are a separate and longer timeline. Most local SEO shows measurable movement in about three to six months, depending on competition and the condition of your site, and Google notes that some changes take effect in hours while others take months.

Do I need an audit before hiring an SEO, or can I just start a retainer?

You can start a retainer without one, and plenty of providers will let you. The question is what the first month buys. Without a diagnostic, month one is usually discovery anyway, billed at retainer rates, with no document you keep. With one, you see the plan and the sequence before you commit, and you can take it elsewhere.

If you are working out what your site needs before committing to a retainer, that is what the Custom SEO Roadmap is for. You get a prioritized plan you can read, hand to your team, or hire us to execute, and the fee is credited toward your first month. Cost depends on your site, your competition, and your goals. We will be clear about pricing before any work begins. The terms are on our SEO pricing and roadmap page, or work with Jeremy to start a conversation.
