By Jeremy Bengtson, founder of The Search Sherpa.
An SEO consultant costs about 75 to 200 dollars an hour in 2026, or roughly 1,000 to 3,000 dollars a month on a retainer for a local business. A one-time project or roadmap usually lands between 2,500 and 5,000 dollars. There is no rate card, and a consultant who hands you one before looking at your site is guessing.
This guide covers what each engagement model buys, what moves the number, and how a consultant compares with an agency or an in-house hire. If you are still deciding whether to hire at all, the companion guide on when to hire an SEO consultant covers the signals and the vetting questions. This page is about the money.
What does an SEO consultant cost in 2026?
Four independent pricing datasets published in the last two years land in roughly the same place, which is unusual for this industry.
An SEO consultant costs about 75 to 200 dollars an hour in the United States, 1,000 to 3,000 dollars a month on a local retainer, and 2,500 to 5,000 for a one-time project or audit. Published surveys put average monthly SEO spend near 3,000 dollars across all provider types, and closer to 1,500 for local SEO. A single-location business usually sits at the lower end of all three.
Here is the evidence. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO service providers and found 75 to 100 dollars an hour to be the most common rate, charged by 24 percent, with only 4.1 percent charging 201 or more (Ahrefs, 439 providers). Backlinko surveyed more than 300 professionals and puts the usual range at 50 to 100 an hour, senior work at 101 to 150, veterans above that (Backlinko, December 2025). Semrush reports a United States consultant average of 144.68 (Semrush). Clutch, drawing on reviews across 65,550 SEO companies, puts general SEO services at 100 to 149 for North American providers (Clutch, September 2026).
Retainers cluster just as tightly. Ahrefs reports an average of 2,917 dollars a month across all provider types and 1,557 for local SEO; Clutch reports 3,199.19. Two datasets, two methods, within ten percent.
| Engagement | 2026 published range | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly consulting | $75 to $200 an hour | Strategy sessions, a second opinion |
| Project or roadmap | $2,500 to $5,000 typical | A plan before any ongoing commitment |
| Local monthly retainer | $1,000 to $3,000 a month | One location, one service area |
| Mid-market retainer | $3,000 to $8,000 a month | Several locations or a competitive region |
| In-house hire | $5,500 to $7,700 a month | Enough work to fill a full-time role |
Our own SEO pricing page publishes that same local band of 1,000 to 3,000 dollars a month, and mid-market work at 3,000 to 8,000. It also states the floor plainly: packages priced below 500 dollars a month cannot sustain the labor-intensive work legitimate organic growth requires. The Search Sherpa publishes no hourly rate and no flat rate card, because a rate card either underprices a hard site or overcharges a simple one. Cost depends on your site, your competition, and your goals. We will be clear about pricing before any work begins.
The four engagement models, and what each one buys
The word consultant covers four different transactions. Mixing them up is the most common reason a quote feels wrong for reasons the owner cannot name.
Hourly consulting
You are buying a person’s attention for a block of time, and nothing else. Backlinko’s data shows rates climbing by roughly 15 to 25 dollars an hour for each year of experience through about year ten, which is why junior and specialist rates sit so far apart. Hourly suits a strategy session, a second opinion, or a technical question your developer cannot settle. It is a poor fit for execution, because hours accumulate and nobody is accountable for finishing them. The Search Sherpa does not bill hourly.
A project or a strategy roadmap
You are buying a deliverable: an audit, a migration plan, a keyword and content map. Ahrefs found 2,501 to 5,000 dollars to be the most common per-project fee, charged by 21.2 percent of providers, and Backlinko places a full audit and content plan in a similar 1,000 to 5,000 band, with larger overhauls at 5,001 to 10,000. Clutch’s average project cost of 37,158.66 dollars says more about enterprise migrations than about a local business; its own typical project is under 10,000. Every Search Sherpa engagement begins with a 2,000 dollar Custom SEO Roadmap, credited toward the first month if you move ahead, and yours to keep if you do not.
A monthly retainer
You are buying continuous work: technical fixes, pages, structured data, profile management, links, reporting. Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of 47 experts ranks primary business category and proximity at the top for the map results, and a dedicated page for each service at the top for local organic results (Whitespark, 2026). That is what local SEO work and Google Business Profile management buy, and why a retainer is mostly labor rather than software.
Hiring in house
You are buying a salary and a seat. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for market research analysts and marketing specialists, the category most in-house SEO roles sit in, at 78,760 dollars in May 2025 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Our pricing page publishes a narrower figure for a qualified in-house SEO manager: 60,000 to 80,000 or more per year, plus 500 to 1,000 a month in tools.
What changes the price of an SEO consultant
Two businesses can get quotes 3,000 dollars apart for what reads like the same scope. These six things account for the gap.
| What moves the price | Why |
|---|---|
| Experience and specialty | Rates rise about $15 to $25 an hour per year of experience |
| Local versus national scope | Local work is narrower; national programs are not |
| Technical condition of the site | A slow or thin site needs repair before growth work |
| Advisory only or execution included | Advice is cheap per hour; building pages is the larger item |
| Competitive density | More competitors means more pages, links and months |
| Reporting and attribution depth | Revenue attribution costs more than a rankings PDF |
Advisory only, or execution included
This distinction explains most of the confusion around consultant pricing. A 150 dollar hourly rate sounds expensive next to a 1,500 dollar retainer until you notice the hourly engagement produces a recommendation and the retainer produces published pages. Ask any quote to state in writing who implements each item and whose hours pay for it. A plan nobody is funded to build is a document, not a program. Decide which you are buying, then read what your SEO provider should be showing you.
Chicago metro rates versus suburban rates
People search for Chicago SEO consultant rates expecting a city rate card. None exists, and the real premium is smaller than owners expect. Clutch groups North American providers at 100 to 149 dollars an hour with no Chicago carve-out, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a mean hourly wage of 35.28 dollars across all occupations in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro area in May 2025, against 33.54 nationally (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Chicago area). About five percent, not a different market. What raises a Chicago quote is competitive density, because a metro that size takes more pages and more months than one suburb. A business serving Mokena, Frankfort, New Lenox and Orland Park is buying a smaller scope, and our guide to local SEO cost in the Chicago suburbs works through that difference.
The economics: consultant, agency, or in-house
This is the decision underneath the price question. You are not choosing a vendor, you are choosing a labor model, and the three carry different costs and risks.
An independent SEO consultant on a local retainer costs roughly 12,000 to 36,000 dollars a year. An in-house SEO manager costs about 66,000 to 92,000 once salary and tools are added, before payroll taxes and benefits. An agency retainer averages about 3,200 dollars a month. For a single-location local business the consultant is usually cheapest, and an in-house hire only becomes efficient when there is enough work to fill the role.
| Option | Annual cost | What you carry |
|---|---|---|
| Independent consultant, local retainer | $12,000 to $36,000 | Limited hours; work pauses if the person is unavailable |
| Agency retainer, published average | about $38,400 | A team, often with an account layer in between |
| In-house manager, salary plus tools | $66,000 to $92,000 | Full-time capacity, plus hiring and replacement |
The arithmetic, shown
Start with the in-house column, the one owners underestimate. Take the salary our pricing page publishes, 60,000 to 80,000 dollars a year, and add the tool budget it also publishes, 500 to 1,000 a month, or 6,000 to 12,000 a year. That is 66,000 to 92,000 annually, about 5,500 to 7,700 a month, and none of it covers payroll taxes, benefits, or your time managing the role. Now take the middle of the local retainer band, 2,000 dollars a month, or 24,000 a year. The in-house route costs roughly three to four times as much.
The hourly and retainer figures reconcile once you convert them. A consultant at 125 dollars an hour, the middle of the common United States band, bills 1,500 for twelve hours a month and 2,500 for twenty. That is the 1,000 to 3,000 dollar local band arrived at from the other direction, and it tells you what a retainer really buys: between half a day and two and a half days of skilled work a month. If a quote sits far below that, the hours are not there. Agency averages run higher, about 38,400 a year.
One more line, on the roadmap. It costs 2,000 dollars and is credited toward the first month, so at that same 2,000 midpoint a first quarter costs 6,000 rather than 8,000. You see the plan, and the price of executing it, before committing to a month of retainer.
What a founder-led model changes, plainly
Most of what you buy from any consultant is judgment, and judgment does not delegate well. The Search Sherpa is founder-led out of Mokena, Illinois. The person who runs your discovery call, writes your strategy, and quotes your price is Jeremy Bengtson, with no account manager in between. That choice has a cost consequence: client load stays small on purpose, so the model does not scale by adding accounts past capacity.
Two things follow. We do not use long-term lock-in contracts, so the engagement is month to month and the work has to keep earning the next one. And you own everything: your domain, your hosting, your Google Business Profile, your analytics. We operate through manager access, and nothing is held back if you leave. The Search Sherpa LLC has served local businesses since 2024, including med spas, law firms, real estate professionals and home service contractors across Will County and the southwest Chicago suburbs. Jeremy holds a business degree from Western Illinois University and is Semrush certified. That is the whole credential list, deliberately.
What the roadmap-first structure removes is retainer risk. The usual arrangement asks you to commit to twelve months on the strength of a sales call. Ours asks you to buy one diagnostic, read the plan, then decide. Hand the playbook to an in-house team instead and the document is yours.
Is an SEO consultant worth it?
For most established local businesses, yes, provided the price is honest and the reporting connects to something you care about. The case is arithmetic rather than faith: a local retainer runs 12,000 to 36,000 dollars a year against 66,000 to 92,000 in house, and the pages a consultant builds keep working after the invoice clears. A paid click does not.
An SEO consultant is worth hiring when the retainer costs less than the customers you are currently invisible to are worth, and when you can wait months rather than weeks. It is a poor purchase for a business that needs booked work this month, and for an owner who will cancel in week six.
The honest caveat is time. Most local SEO shows measurable movement in about three to six months, depending on competition and the condition of your site, and meaningful pipeline usually takes six to twelve. Ahrefs found that 72.9 percent of pages in Google’s top ten are more than three years old (Ahrefs, May 2025). We do not promise rankings, lead counts, or map placements, because no honest provider can. Google says the same: no one can guarantee a top position in its results, and be wary of anyone claiming a special relationship with Google (Google Search Central).
The calculation has also shifted. Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 Google searches by 900 United States adults and found that users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result on 8 percent of visits, against 15 percent when no summary appeared (Pew Research Center, July 2025). Informational traffic is being absorbed. The searches that still convert are the ones where someone is ready to buy, which is where a retainer should spend its hours, and why answer engine optimization belongs inside the fee rather than beside it.
How to read an SEO consultant’s proposal
A legitimate proposal itemizes four things: the deliverables for the first ninety days with names and dates, who implements each one, which tools are used and who pays, and what the monthly report will show. Name a price against a vague activity list and you cannot tell what you bought until the quarter is over.
Four things should stop you. A promise of specific rankings or lead counts, which no provider controls. Undisclosed subcontracting, where the person you met is not the one doing the work. A report with no decision in it, only charts. And an hourly arrangement with no scope, which is a blank check in a professional font. Ask three questions of anyone, including me: what does this cost and what exactly does it include, who does the work, and what will the report tell me to do.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an SEO consultant cost per month?
For a local business, an SEO consultant usually costs 1,000 to 3,000 dollars a month, and 3,000 to 8,000 for multi-location or competitive regional work. Published surveys put average monthly SEO spend at 2,917 dollars across all provider types and 1,557 for local SEO. There is no flat rate; cost depends on your site, your competition, and your goals.
What is a normal SEO consultant hourly rate?
In the United States, 75 to 200 dollars an hour covers most independent SEO consultants, with 100 to 150 the common middle. Ahrefs found 75 to 100 to be the single most common rate, charged by 24 percent of providers, and Semrush reports a United States consultant average of 144.68. Rates rise roughly 15 to 25 dollars an hour per year of experience. The Search Sherpa does not bill hourly.
What do SEO consultant rates look like in the Chicago area?
There is no published Chicago-only rate card, and the metro premium is smaller than people assume. Clutch groups North American providers at 100 to 149 dollars an hour with no city carve-out, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin mean hourly wage at 35.28 dollars in May 2025 against 33.54 nationally, about five percent. What raises a Chicago quote is competitive density, not geography.
Is an SEO consultant cheaper than an SEO agency?
Usually, but not dramatically. Ahrefs reports freelancers averaging 1,348.63 dollars a month against 3,209 for agencies and 3,250 for consultancies, and Clutch puts the average agency month at 3,199.19. The real difference is not the invoice, it is who does the work: an agency gives you a team and often an account layer, a consultant fewer hours from the person who made the plan.
Is hiring an SEO consultant cheaper than hiring someone in house?
For a single-location local business, yes, by roughly three to four times. A qualified in-house SEO manager costs 60,000 to 80,000 dollars or more per year in salary plus 500 to 1,000 a month in tools, or 66,000 to 92,000 a year before payroll taxes and benefits. A local retainer at the middle of the published band is 24,000. An in-house hire makes sense once there is enough work to fill the role.
How long before an SEO consultant’s work pays for itself?
Most local SEO shows measurable movement in about three to six months, depending on competition and the condition of your site, and meaningful pipeline usually takes six to twelve months. The payback point depends on what a customer is worth to you, which is why an honest quote asks that before naming a number. Anyone offering top rankings in thirty days is selling something they do not control.
If you want a number instead of a range, the fastest route is a plan. Our SEO pricing page sets out the bands and the Custom SEO Roadmap that comes before any retainer, and SEO, local SEO and Google Business Profile explains what you are shopping for. Cost depends on your site, your competition, and your goals. We will be clear about pricing before any work begins.
